   General Information   


The S.I.R.T. program is designed to assist the Spokane County Sheriff in emergency situations when required, and to foster good relations within our communities by assisting with a variety of community events whenever possible.

Activities

  • Emergency Traffic Control
  • Access Control in Traffic Motor Vehcle Accidents and/or Fatalities
  • Structural Fires or Wildfires
  • Crime Scenes in Spokane County
  • Parades, Races and other Special Events 

Requirements

  • Valid Washington State Driver's License
  • Completion of SCOPE Basic and COP (Citizen on Patrol) Training
  • Completion of SCOPE Defensive Driving class with current certificate (renewal required every 3 years).
  • Completion of SCOPE Flagging class
  • Completion of SIRT Training
  • Attend monthly meetings the second Saturday monthly usually at the Spokane Valley Precinct starting at 0900.
  • Attend field exercises and ongoing training
  • Be available to standby and respond a few hours every month
  • Be available to participate in special events whenever possible
  • Members are required to find a replacement if they cannot perform their duty as originally scheduled.

Standby Requirements 

  • Two individuals and two trucks are usually on duty during the month with a potential third unit available.
  • There are 60 shifts in a 30 day month. Each member is required to spend at least two days per month on duty and selects preferred days.
  • On duty members are called out by the Spokane County Sheriff's radio dispatchers via a pager.
  • Other members are willing to be ready to be called out if absolutely necessary.

Uniforms 

  • Brown uniforms are provided by and are the property of the Spokane County Sheriff's Office.
  • Brown SIRT uniforms are NOT to be worn mixed with the SCOPE green uniforms. 
  • Members must wear their uniforms for all SIRT responses, training, meetings, Disabled Parking Patrol, Sheriff's Front Desk Duty and Abandoned Vehicle Enforcement.
  • Spokane County Identication Cards must be worn while in uniform.
  • Brown uniforms must be returned to the Sheriff's office upon leaving the SIRT program 

 General SIRT Duties 

  • Pre-Dispatch preparation
  • Radio and pager operations
  • SIRT truck orientation and operation
  • Map reading
  • Practical experience with equipment
  • Typical 'scene setups'
  • Understand and follow SIRT vehicle policy
  • Complete and submit all necessary forms and reports

Reports

  • Official documentation is required for all incident involvement, including any complaints or concerns, liability issues, volunteers 'on-scene' time, and others as required. Member keeps one copy. Other copies are delivered or faxed to the SIRT coordinator.
  • A report must be completed and submitted for all vehicle accidents

Security and Safety 

  • Remain vigilant
  • Plan an escape route
  • Always wear safety related items
  • Member is responsible for security of vehicles and equipment.
  • Be sure to keep doors locked and keep track of all equipment.

Media and the Public

  • Locate a 'Media Center' and follow SIRT policy.

Ride-Along Program and Certification

  •  Receive approval by the SIRT Coordinator
  • Complete required training

SIRT Time Reporting

  • SIRT hours are reported on the SCOPE Volunteer Timesheet.
  • All time spent 'on-scene' is counted even if it exceeds 8 hours per day.
  • Up to 8 hours per day of 'stand by' time can be counted.
  • Be sure to contact the SIRT Coordinator with questions about your hours.
